Franz Wöhrer was a football player when a friend asked him to try refereeing together. It was 1957 when Wöhrer took charge of his first match. He reached the highest level in Austria in 1964 and stayed until 1987. Internationally he was active from 1969 till 1987.
More than 300 matches in the Bundesliga (used to be called Staatsliga), and 8 Cup finals. Internationally: 160 matches all in all, with 75 for the Europa Cup. One match for the European Championships, a Club World Cup final (1987, his last), the 1980 Olympic Games and one match in the 1982 World Cup.
Wöhrer, a retired school teacher is still active as a referee observer (2008).
