He had a fast career in football refereeing, already taking charge of the FA cup in 1981 at 36 (and also of the replay). He refereed one match in the 1988 European Championships and a semi-final at the Olympic Games in the same year.
He ritired internationally in 1991 but in England he even went on after his official retirement, getting an extension of two more years before finally retiring in 1994.
