Cakar reached the Champions League quarter finals and the UEFA Cup semi-finals both in 1995 and took charge of a match in the 1996 European Championships. However he is more famous for his appearances on Turkish Television after his retirement and for the fact that he nearly got himself killed.
Ahmet Cakar is a bit of a funny man who is not scared to bad important people. That must have made him enemies because in 2004, after a visit to his dentist, Cakar got hit by 4 bullets. His chauffeur got hit as well. Both survived and soon Cakar was back on TV. The shooter was never caught and Cakar alleged that then Fenerbahce president Ali Sen was behind the assassination attempt.
"O koltukta utanmalisin", Cakar typically yelled at the Galatasaray president: You ought to be ashamed of yourself. This outburst caused Ali Sen to call the studio and start arguing live with Cakar
Cakar : You are old, you don't know nothing (very disrespectful against someone older and richer)
Sen: Why are you attacking me? I helped you often enough with your career.
As if getting shot isn't enough, in February 2012 Cakar suffered from what looked like a stroke live on television. He slumps and the people at the table at first don't notice it.
