In 1998, Esfandiar Baharmast was the first American referee to take charge of two matches in a World Cup. MLS referee of the year 1997 when he officiated the US open Cup, and the MLS and A-League finals all in the same year. He was also active in the 1996 Olympic Games and retired internationally at the end of 1998.
