The Rangers had won the first leg of the 2nd round of the 1972 Cup Winner's Cup and Sporting won the return match so Lau Van Ravens ordered a penalty shoot-out. The Portuguese won.
But the Dutch referee had forgotten about the newly installed away-goal rule. The first match had ended in 3-2 and the second in 4-3 making the Rangers winners on aggregate.
Later while hanging around gloomily in their dressing room, the Scots were told they had won after all. In fact the Rangers went on to win the tournament.
This is a short film in Dutch about Lau at 89 (!) driving to a club and teaching a young referee.
