Danny Desmond Makkelie is a category 2 referee who got his FIFA badge in 2011. He is active in the Dutch Eredivisie since 2009 and an A-group referee since 2010. It was thanks to Pieter Vink's early retirement that this Dutchman became a FIFA ref so soon.
Like Vink, Danny was a police man before he got a job with the Dutch FA (KNVB). But being a professional referee in the Netherlands means the FA gives you a desk job to kill time between training and officiating matches. Makkelie found sitting in an office boring and went back to policing the streets for his old job.
In his first Champions League match (a qualifier) Makkelie ended up showing ten yellows and three reds. Nine yellows and all reds (one direct) went to the home team Zeljeznicar.
Makkelie took charge of the final of the 2012 European Championship under 19.
