Stuart has been fast - tracked through the leagues. He started in 1998 and was a SG referee in 2008. Spending only 1 season as a NG referee, 1 season as a Contributory League referee and 1 season as a Panel referee. But then came 2012 when he was demoted from the Premier League after too many controversies. And taken of the international list.

The goal that never was...
In only Stuart's 2nd game as a SG official, he refereed Reading v Watford. A corner was curled in and a Reading player put the ball past the post. The assistant referee signaled a goal and after talking to him, Attwell gave a goal. The ball actually was 3ft wide of the post.
Then there was the red card for Bolton's Gary Cahill who denied Tottenham player Scott parker a goal scoring opportunity. The red card was rescinded because the offence happened near the half way line.

Debate
There was a lot of debate about Attwell being promoted to FIFA. By then he had refereed only 4, yes 4 premier league matches.

International
The was the final of the 2011 Euro under 19, for more see his palmares. Stuart Attwell was a UEFA Category 2 referee.
