World and European Cup referee Günter Benkö started as a football player himself. He got injured in his knees at the age of 25. In 1980 he decided to start a refereeing career.
From 1991 he was active in the Austrian Bundesliga. Benkö started his international career in 1993 with u21 match. From then on he climbed steadily with Champion League matches in 1995.
In the 1998 WC in France Benkö refereed two matches. Also in 1998 he was active at the Gulf Cup of Nations in Bahrain.
At Euro 2000 in Netherland/Belgium Benkö was elected best referee of the tournament.
